As useful as it is on holidays, luggage suddenly becomes a hassle while not travelling, especially if you live in a small apartment or house. Because, well, how do you store luggage?

If you’re wondering that, then you desperately need to find space for your travel bags. Those bags that kept you company during your vacation, but now occupy your hallway or bedroom floor space.

I’ve been in that situation, trust me, so I’m here to help you out with at least 6 spaces you can try to fit your luggage in.

You might not physically have some of the spaces I mention (garage, attic), but I’m sure you can definitely find a spot out of the remaining suggestions, some are pretty innovative…or at least, you definitely didn’t think of them first hand.

So let’s find out how to store luggage and tips & tricks on how to organize luggage.

1. Under the bed

This is applicable, of course, if your bed has space underneath it.

Which most do, but some beds are very low, and others are closed off, so it doesn’t allow space for other stuff.

So if you do have a bed and you can store luggage under the bed, definitely go for this option.

I recommend this place if your house is really small and you need the rest of the suggestions (closet, stairs) for other items.

If you want to use it to its maximum potential, you could store other bags or clothes in them, while you’re at it, but more on that later.

2. In the closet

Out of all the options of how to store luggage that are mentioned in this post, this is ideal, in my opinion. It’s close by (not all the way in the garage) and you don’t need to make an effort to get it out (attic).

If you have a walk-in closet, you can store the luggage underneath a high rack of hangers. Or somewhere in a corner. Or on top of the racks. Anyway you can and it doesn’t interfere with your daily activities.

If you have a simple closet, you can, similarly, put it below some high racks of hangers, or in a dedicated space, if you have it.

3. In the attic

This is one of the suggestions I was unsure of. Do people still have attics? Do they still use it? I know there are still houses out there with attics, so I decided to add it, in the end.

Storing your luggage in the attic is great because it doesn’t occupy any house spaces that you could use for other items. Plus, it’s out of mind, out of sight.

It is put in a designated spot and it doesn’t bother anymore.

The downside of putting things in the attics is that it’s harder to get there and maneuver things around. It’s not as easy as opening a door and getting the bags. You will probably need to climb some stairs, duck under ceilings, and so on. But overall it does save space inside your actual house in which you live.

4. In the garage

Another place not a lot of people might own, but that is very handy to have, including for luggage storage, is the garage.

This would be ideal because you are not occupying actual home space. So the house is not as crowded, and you have more space for other things.

Just make sure you store the luggage correctly, but more on that later, in the tips & tricks section.

5. Underneath the stairs

If you have a house with more than one floor, then you definitely have stairs. Considering how they are built, there is, in most cases, free space underneath the stairs.

The problem is people don’t usually know what to put there. Well, here’s an option: store luggage.

The bags usually fit under the stairs, and you will probably still have space left for other boxes or items.

This storage option is my second favorite of the list (after closet), because it’s still in the house, but in a space you don’t usually use, therefore it doesn’t feel like it’s occupying too much space.

6. Behind the couch (or other furniture items)

People with small homes completely understand when I say storage spaces are extremely important and knowing how to organize items in them is definitely a valuable skill.

If this is your issue, then let me present to you another storing option for luggage: behind a couch or other big furniture piece.

I saw this at my aunt’s house when I was younger, and I thought it was genius. The shape of the couch was a key factor in this arrangement, because it had a deeper, more inclined backrest section. And since it was positioned against a wall, they just pushed a bit farther from it, so they had more space to work with (and hide things behind).

You should consider this option in your home, too, especially if you have a large living room.

Tips & Tricks On How to Store Luggage

Ideally, get a dust bag for luggage. A dust bag (or even just a large garbage bag) will help the bag stay clean and not collect any dust that you will have to wipe off every time you go on vacation.

Smaller bag in bigger bag. This is a great trick I actually thought of when I took my first transatlantic trip. I put my 20lb carry-on bag, full with all my clothes, shoes, toiletries, etc, in my big 50lb bag and checked it in. That way I didn’t have to carry around the airports an empty bag, but I had space for my new purchases when I returned. Similarly, you can do the same with your empty luggage. Put the smaller one in the bigger one, so this way, you only have to store one bag, not two.

Conclusion

If you were wondering how to store luggage, I hope this article was useful to you and you got at least 1 new spot idea to work with.

Autumn is coming up and one of the most important things you need to know is how to make your house smell like fall.

Why?

Because smells affect our mood, according to Scientific American:“Odors do affect people’s mood […] it isn’t because odors work on us like a drug, instead we work on them through our experiences with them. That is, in order for an odor to elicit any sort of response in you, you have to first learn to associate it with some event.”

That’s why, for example, some people love the smell of apples. They do because their mother used to make apple pies every weekend when they were little. So naturally, they now associate apples with a warm, loving feeling.

So if you want to have a cozy home in which you feel safe and at peace, it’s time to figure out how to make your house smell like fall.

It could be as simple as lighting a Bath & Body Works candle. Or using fall scented cleaning products. Or, if you have time, and want to go the homemade route, try making a simmer pot (more details on how to make one below).

Either way, a nice smelling house will improve your and your family’s mood, so definitely check out the options below and choose at least one for your home.

Here are my top 6 ways to make your house smell like fall:

Option 1: Candles

The first and obvious choice: candles.

Bath & Body Works candles are usually the top brand most people go for, and I get why.

They’re available nationwide, in stores and online.

A wide variety of scents.

Cool naming and packaging (hello “Sweater Weather”)

My favorite fall candles from Bath & Body Works are Leaves and Pumpkin Apple.

Now, you don’t have to go to this particular store. You can choose Yankee, or handmade candles from a local store.

You can even get a candle subscription, like Wickbox, go check it out here.

But make sure you have at least one fall candle in your collection, it also doubles as a home decor object.

Option 2: Oil diffusers

Ever since Young Living and DoTerra came into the picture, the oil diffuser industry has grown exponentially.

I’m not a fan of MLM’s, but oil diffusing can be a good thing. I use one to refresh a room’s scent and also, to help humidify, especially during colder months.

Aromatherapy is another topic in itself, but I’m not going there at the moment.

Either way, I believe an oil diffuser can also make your house smell like fall, if you use oil combinations like the following:

Cinnamon + clove + nutmeg

Wild orange + cinnamon

If you don’t want to support the big MLM companies, you can go for cheaper Amazon oil diffusers options, like these one:

Essential Oil Diffuser Aromacare 600ml Cool Mist Humidifier- link here

Or this set of oil diffuser and oils to start with

Ultimate Aromatherapy Diffuser & Essential Oil Set – link here

If you want a fancier looking oil diffuser, this Aroma Tech Aromini machine looks amazing, but it’s on the pricier side.

Option 3: Room sprays / Wall Plugin

Another great way to make your home smell like fall is to use room sprays or wall plugins.

Room Sprays, like this Febreze one, requires daily effort from your part. But if you sprayed it all over, it would leave a lingering, powerful scent.

Wall Plug-ins, on the other hand, require just a plug-in and a weekly or monthly change.

You can find cheaper options on Amazon, or you can go the Bath & Body Works route, it doesn’t really matter.

For example, you can get 10 refills of the Air Wick Apple Cinnamon Plug In for $18.99 right now from Amazon (at the time of the posting this).

Option 4: Homemade simmer pot

If you want to know how to make your house smell like fall in a natural and cheap way, the simmer pot is the way to go, in my opinion.

You just need a couple of simple ingredients and a pot of water.

Here’s how to make a fall simmer pot:

Fill a large pot ¾ full of water

Add cinnamon sticks, apple slices, orange slices (or peels), vanilla, nutmeg, cranberries, etc.

Optional, you can also add a few drops of essential oils

Boil the water on a slow heat setting, but make sure the concoction doesn’t burn.

And that’s how you make a homemade fall simmer pot. Feel free to add whatever ingredient you think might smell good during the colder months.

Now you’re all ready for fall! Prepare this, put on your cozy slippers and loungewear set, and just relax!

Option 5: Cinnamon scented pinecones

This option would be great for people who like to do fall-inspired table centerpieces.

Adding cinnamon scented pinecones to it will not only make the table piece better, but also make the room smell like fall.

You can get them on Amazon here: Redolent Cinnamon Scented Pine Cones

Option 6: Fall-scented cleaning products

The last way to make your house smell like fall is to use fall-scented cleaning products.

Mrs Meyers products are the best example for that, but you can use other brands, as well, of course.

The cool thing about these fall-scented products is that they are multi-purpose. You can use them for cleaning, but they also smell nice, so they can be a good way to make your home smell like fall. Two birds with one stone, am I right?

For example, you can try the Mrs. Meyers Apple Cider Set that has a hand soap, a dish soap, and a multi-surface cleaner. Similarly, you can get it in the Acorn & Spices scent.

You probably just spilled coffee on the floor, didn’t you? And don’t know how to remove coffee stains from your rug?

For the very fast answer, just scroll down a bit and read how to get rid of coffee stains from carpet.

And know that I completely understand what you’re going through, because I’ve been in that situation exactly 6 days ago.

I was getting ready to leave, so I decided to have one last sip of my iced coffee. I drank it and when I wanted to put the glass back on the table, I missed my mark and it tumbled down. Luckly, not all the coffee got on the carpet, but it was enough to make a rather large spot on my rug.

The next 5 minutes were spent frantically trying to find a solution, Googling “how to remove coffee stains from carpet” and calling my mom to give me cleaning hacks. With the help of Google and my mom, I managed to get most of it out, and to the untrained eye, it’s not even noticeable. But I still want to try some other things, too, because I still notice it.

Here is what I did to remove the stains from my carpet.

How to remove coffee stains from carpet

Quickly blot the stain, don’t rub

If the coffee stain is fresh, you have to move fast and make sure the stain doesn’t stick to the carpet or spread. So take a white cloth and blot the coffee, going from the outside to the middle of the stain.

DON’T RUB THE CARPET, it will make it way worse to clean, because the coffee will be trapped in the fibers of the rug.

Use the following homemade coffee stain cleaning solution

Take out a bowl and mix

one tablespoon of liquid dish soap,

one tablespoon of white vinegar and

two cups of warm water.

Then grab a clean cloth, dip it into the solution and apply it on the coffee stain. Similarly to the last step, go from outside to the middle of the stain. After you’ve covered the whole area, blot it with a dry towel.

Rinse with cold water

Use cold water on a clean cloth to rinse the area, making sure to blot up the liquid, not rub. Then let the carpet air dry.

Easiest way to remove coffee stains from carpet

If you can and have the means to do it, just take it to the cleaners….or use a powerful carpet cleaner. Below you’ll find a decently priced alternative from Amazon.

Power Dash – You can find on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/3erSWcG

The carpet cleaners have the best tools, are expert in removing all kinds of stains and will, most likely, do a better job than you would. Yes, they are a more expensive option, but if you want to save yourself the hassle, just take the carpet to the carpet cleaners.

What I tried and didn’t really work

A while ago, I had a small coffee stain and, at the moment, the only thing I could think of is the classic clothes stain remover. So I used it, I sprayed it on the carpet, then rubbed it off with water. I shouldn’t have done that. I shouldn’t have rubbed it off, because guess what, it didn’t really work.

Maybe I should have tried steaming it. I recently read about a hack for how to remove coffee stains from carpet where you apply the solution, let it sit for 10 minutes, then put a damp cloth over it and iron it for 30 seconds. Apparently that takes out the stain, but I haven’t tried it yet.

How to remove old coffee stains

If a member of your family did the deed and didn’t tell you, or if you postponed the cleaning moment, don’t fret, there are solutions.

Start by wetting the stain with warm water to loosen the dried coffee. Then follow the steps above as if it was a fresh new coffee stain.

If it doesn’t work, well, I’m sorry to say you might need to take the carpet to the cleaners (or have them come by your place), they should be able to clean any difficult spots.

I hope at least one of my solutions on how to remove coffee stains from carpet helped. Let me know in the comments if you have any other cleaning hacks up your sleeves!

If you’re a book lover, packing books for moving will probably be one of the most, if not the most important task of the moving process. You are transporting precious cargo, am I right? 🙂

Even if you’re not a huge book fan, but you have many, then you still need to know how to pack books for moving in the best way possible.

Why? Because books are tricky to pack:

They occupy a lot of space because of their size.

Hardcovers are usually pretty heavy.

Paperback editions can be fragile, especially if you’re not careful with the edges.

That’s why it’s important to know how to pack books for moving. You need to make sure the packaging is appropriate and can hold that many books. Then you need to pack them the right way in order for them to not be damaged during transportation. And of course, let’s not forget sorting and labeling them.

So if you care about your books and you want to make sure they make it safe and sound to your new place, here is how to pack books for moving:

Size down your book collection before packing

First thing first. Size down!

I know, a tragedy! But trust me, it’s better in the long run, you will have a cleaner, more organized space….and more room for new books!

I recommend going through your whole collection and checking to see if there are any books you don’t want or don’t need anymore. If you’re stuck on the how, I’ve actually written a short, but comprehensive guide on How to declutter books. Check out the article for more details!

Group the books before packing them

If you want to make your life easier when you have to unpack, think of a way to organize them before actually packaging them.

There are many ways to go about:

It can be by type of books: Hardcovers and Paperbacks. I don’t particularly recommend this option because you will end up with heavy boxes (with the hardcovers) and lightweight boxes (with the paperbacks), and too bad for the people who will have to carry the heavy ones.

You could also try packing them by author. Especially if you have large collections of prolific authors like Stephen King.

I also recommend the genres option. Young adults in one box, non-fiction in another, and so on.

Either way, think about how you will organize them in the new place, and pack them accordingly, to make your life easier.

How to pack books in BOXES

The first and obvious choice of packaging are BOXES.

Preferably, sturdy, medium-size cardboard boxes that are sealed with sturdy packing tape on the bottom and the top.

Before actually starting to pack, make sure the boxes are not damp, because then they will ruin the books. Also, have a marker on hand to label each box.

How to pack hardcover books in boxes

The easiest way to do that is to place the hardcovers in the box standing upright, with the spine against the box’s side part. Exactly like you would arrange them on a shelf.

How to pack paperback books in boxes

The paperbacks can be packed in flat stacks, one on top of the other. Or you can set them spine first in order for the paper edges to face up. That way, you will avoid bending the pages.

How to pack books in SUITCASES

Yes, you’ve read that right. You can pack books in suitcases. I’ve done it before.

It’s not exactly convenient or efficient, but you can do it, in certain circumstances.

For example, I had two large suitcases that I would fill up with books every day and take them to the new place. I was in a particularly lucky scenario where I wasn’t in a hurry to move all in one go, so I took my time packing and transporting my things, and I could afford to transport only two suitcases a day. I know most people are not that lucky, so you might not like this option.

But if you can, or if you have extra suitcases you can use on the day of the move, just stack the books on top of each other and trolly them to your new home.

How to transport the books

The books are packed, labeled and ready to go to the new place. But how will they get them to the new place? There are multiple options, but the two most frequently used ones are

Transporting them yourself (with your car or a rented van), or

Hiring a moving company.

I definitely recommend hiring a local moving company, like Fresh Start – The Moving Crew Springfield,. They’re considered to be one of the most trusted moving companies out there and have great reviews. They do residential and commercial moving in Springfield MA and surrounding areas, and they have 8+ years of experience. If you’re in the area, check them out!

All in all, moving companies are great because they will literally do the heavy lifting for you. Moreover, it will save you money and time and effort. Win-win on both sides.

So this is! Now it’s time to start packing! I hope this blog post helped you; let me know in the comment how you prefer to pack books for moving!

Learning how to keep your house cool in the summer will save you time and money, but will also make you feel better during those hot summer days (and nights). I know for myself that some areas can get super hot and humid, and after a while, it becomes extremely uncomfortable to sit in high temperatures.

When it comes to cooling methods and things, you don’t need a lot of gadgets or expensive tools to keep your house cool in the summer.

Yes, ideally you should have AC installed, but not all people have or can afford to get it done. Or want to spend that much money on electricity. So most people have to find new and innovative ways to keep a home cool during summer. Like me (and probably you, since you’re reading this)

Now, personally, I do have AC, but I’ve also recently had an issue with it, so I can speak from both perspectives. That week of no AC was pretty hard, especially on my partner, so we both tried to find ways to cool ourselves when the AC was broken. And we did, so I want to share with you the tips & tricks to cool down a house during summer.

Below you can find 6 simple & efficient ways to keep your house cool in the summer. 5 out of 6 don’t include the use of AC, so you don’t actually need it. Let’s dive in:

1. Keep the blinds down during the day

It might not be obvious for some, but heat can come from the windows. If it’s sunny outside and the sun is shining through the windows, it can create heat in the house.

That’s why most people recommend closing the blinds during the day. Less light, less heat, cooler temperatures inside.

I usually close the blinds as soon as I wake up, especially the bigger ones in the living room, the office and the bedroom. I suggest you do the same for the rooms you usually sit in more (like the living room) and/or in the ones you sleep in.

Or you can wake up, open the windows (if they weren’t open during the night), let the rooms freshen up for 15-20 minutes, then close the blinds (and possibly even the windows themselves).

Best and most efficient tip on how to keep your house cool in the summer, in my opinion!

2. Open the windows and doors in the night

If you’ve kept the blinds down during the day, well, during the night is when you should open the windows and doors. Since the temperature usually drops a little at night, it’s the perfect time to let the cooler night air in.

It’s also great because it gets the house (and its occupants) ready for sleepy time. According to Healthline, people sleep better with cooler temperatures. Or better said, people sleep worse if it’s too hot.

3. Change ceiling fans rotation

This is something I had no idea about until recently.

If you have a ceiling fan, make sure it rotates counter-clockwise in the summer. That helps push air straight down, so it can create a cooling effect. Similarly, make it go clockwise in the winter to pull cool air up.

The first time I tried it I was shocked, I didn’t know I should do this. This helps tremendously at night, especially, in the bedroom, to cool off the air. And it’s a better and cheaper alternative to air conditioning.

4. Avoid using the oven or stove

This is a weird trick, and you might think it doesn’t have a big impact, but it does.

Try to limit your use of the oven and/or stove. When you use them, they bring unnecessary heat to your kitchen, so it will automatically make the room hotter. And if you have an open kitchen, you can expect the heat to go to the sitting area, as well.

I suggest using them sparingly (once every two-three days) and for a short time. And make sure the kitchen hood vent is working perfectly, so it can draw the smell and a bit of the heat.

5. Use the AC in sessions

If you do have AC in the house, first of all, lucky you! You’ve kind of already solved the issue of how to keep your house cool in the summer.

But if you want to save money, and you don’t like being in an air conditioning environment all the time, there are ways to go about it.

I recommend the following tactic: turn it on for an hour in the morning, with the blinds down, so you create a cool atmosphere, then turn it off. This should help keep the air cool until mid afternoon (at one o’clock, or two or three), and that’s when you do the same thing again. One hour of AC and then stop. By the time the third wave of heat should come in, it’s night and the temperatures are more bearable, so you don’t have to use it again.

If the AC is too strong to be on for one hour, you could do 15 or 30 minutes sessions, every two to three hours. Your choice, just test it out!

6. Cool yourself, not the house

Here’s a different way of looking at things. Don’t keep your house cool in the summer. Instead, cool yourself. It might work.

You can survive warm temperatures by cooling yourself, not specifically the room. Some of my favorite tips when it comes to cooling off are:

How to keep a tidy house might feel a full-time job in itself. Especially if you have a big family and/or dogs. I don’t have any of those, and I still feel like I have a messy home most times.

That’s why I’ve developed some habits over time that have helped me keep a tidy house. Most of them are easy to do, but they do require work, especially at the beginning, until the habit is actually formed and it is part of your routine.

For me, it’s really a “tidy home, tidy mind” mindset. Because I know I get frustrated and overwhelmed when the house is too messy, so I need a clean space to feel organized and in control. That’s why I implement the tips below all the time.

Let me help you! Here are 5 easy tips & tricks on how to keep a tidy house:

1. Stick to your cleaning schedule.

You might think this is counterintuitive or that it shouldn’t belong here, but it’s actually the most important thing.

If you create a simple, easy to do cleaning schedule (like mine, check it out), it will be easier to do, faster, and more efficient. Moreover, because the schedule involves a bit of cleaning almost every day, your house will feel clean and tidy all the time.

So if you want to know how to keep a tidy house, start by writing your main cleaning tasks and divide them by days, so that it’s easier. (Here’s an idea to get you started) Then work on forming the habit of cleaning. It will make all the difference, trust me.

2. Never leave clothes or bags on the floor.

This is not an issue I have, because I’ve never ever left my clothes on the floor (of the bedroom, dressing or any other place). I’ve always been a rather tidy and organized person. But I’ve noticed not all are like me. So I feel like I should mention it.

If your clothes are dirty, put them in the dirty clothes bin. If you’ve decided not to wear that skirt today, please don’t leave it on the floor. It will get dirty, you will have to wash it again, and that’s not ok. Just put it back on the hanger. Or at least leave it on your bed. You’ll have to put it back in the closet if you want to sleep on it…..right?!

Similarly, I recommend not leaving shopping bags on the floor for days. Actually, this is something I used to do as a teenager. I was too lazy to get the clothes out and put them on a hanger or to be washed, so I would just leave them there. And then the room would get 5% more messy. Don’t be like teenage Diana.

3. Clean up the counters.

Cleaning up the counters, or tables, for that matter, should not be a weekly thing. It’s actually my most important tip when it comes to how to keep a tidy house.

In order for your home to feel clean, you need to clean up after yourself as often as you can. That means:

Putting the groceries and the shopping items away when you get home, as soon as you can.

Tidying up on the spot a place that feels crowded or messy.

Putting books, pill bottles, cables, etc, back to their original spot (drawers, shelves, and so on)

Storing away all kitchen utensils and tools after using them (like the crockpot or the washed pots and pans)

If you leave it all for Saturday morning, you will be overwhelmed and will possibly delay it even further. So start doing it bit by bit. Right now, the crockpot. Twenty minutes later, the pan. 1 hour later, put the sweets back in the snack drawer. And so on.

4. Always wash the dishes. (or put them in the dishwasher)

I know most of you will say it’s impossible to do all the time. To form a habit out of it. And I understand. But you have to do it- your morning self will thank you for it.

Personally, I started washing my dishes after every meal because of a cockroach situation. Since they are attracted to food leftovers, I wanted to avoid any scenario in which they would show up, so I started to dutifully wash the dishes. And it worked, partially; I got rid of them by doing this, but also by using a good cockroach spray.

So the tip is easy. Wash your dishes before or after you eat. I like to wash my knives and utensils whilst waiting for the food to cook, and the plates after dinner. This way, I wake up to a clean kitchen.

If you have a dishwasher, then you are in luck. Just stick them in there after dinner, it won’t take long.

5. Get a robot vacuum.

This might not be for everyone because it involves investing some money into it. But let me tell you, my robot saved my life. Well, it made it a whole lot easier, that’s for sure.

You want to know how to keep a tidy house, especially the floors, with little effort? Get a robot vacuum.

Before THE VACUUM, I would clean the floors once a week, and it would be my most dreaded task, mostly because it felt like a workout, and I don’t particularly enjoy workouts.

After THE VACUUM came into our lives, I switched to using the vertical one once a month, for a proper clean. Because the robot vacuum is enough to clean my 2 bedroom apartment.

It’s automatically set to run three times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday), and the cleaning session lasts for about 45 minutes, mostly because my living room rug is very fluffy, so it takes longer to clean it.

The robot vacuum helps keep the floors clean and the dust off, and I don’t need to do a workout every week. Win-win. Here’s the robot vacuum I use, it’s the Roborock S5 max.

So here we are. 5 tips & tricks on how to keep a tidy house. I hope they helped! What do you do to keep your home clean all the time? Let me know in the comments!
