When it comes to your bedroom, the nightstand is one of the most important parts of the room.

Why? Because you use your nightstand every night, and it usually holds your most necessary items, like a phone or water bottles. It also somehow attracts attention when you enter the room, so more reasons to make sure it looks nice.

Now, I know there are people who don’t use one at all, or only to hold a phone (*ahem* my boyfriend), but they’re not the target audience for this post 🙂

So if you’re here, looking for nightstand decor ideas and how to style a nightstand, you’ve come to the right place.

I’m here to help you with 5 core items / ideas you can easily implement today in your space. You probably have all of them, and if you don’t, you can find them for pretty cheap in many stores.

These nightstand decor ideas will help you, not only efficiently use the space, but also create a warmer, more inviting, and cool space in your bedroom.

So let’s see how to style a nightstand!

Nightstand Decor Idea #1: Framed Art or Photos

This is a decor hack I’ve recently learned and I absolutely love it. I’ve already implemented it on my nightstand.

FRAMED ART or PHOTOS.

A large, framed poster / painting / picture, ideally that matches the color palette of the rest of the room, looks amazing and gives the space a bit of personality. And god knows my bedroom definitely needs a bit of spicing up, it’s very basic right now.

I’ve added a framed picture from a classic movie and I love the way it looks.

Nightstand Decor Idea #2: Book stacking

When researching the topic of “How to style a nightstand”, the book stacking was probably the most used nightstand decor ideas out there.

Similarly to a coffee table, stacking table books one on top of eachother can help fill up a larger space. They also add an interesting, extra surface to decorate.

For the bedroom, though, I suggest limiting yourself to 2-5 books. Any more, and it would look crowded.

Here’s my take on it. I stacked 2-3 books, and in later photos, I added a fake succulent on top. It gives character to the space and elongates the visual area.

Nightstand Decor Idea #3: Light Source

Can we really do a nightstand decor ideas list without adding a lamp? Or a light source of any kind? I think not.

Most people go for bedside lamps, and I agree. There are so many cool designs out there from which you can choose. You just have to know your style.

Alternatively, you can have a night light, or a new fancy digital clock that gives light. Or a 2-in-1, like this Bedside Table Lamp with Touch Control and USB Charging Port, that can also act as an alarm clock.

I, personally, have a classic, very boring bedside lamp from IKEA. Which reminds me, I should really change it soon, it doesn’t match my vibe.

Nightstand Decor Idea #4: Flowers and/or Plants

Plants are always a good idea, no matter the room of the house. But for a bedroom, I recommend a smaller pot / plant or a small vase with flowers.

I think less is more, especially in the bedroom. No need to crowd the place with a lot of plants, or big ones. So that’s why a smaller pot or vase would look great on a nightstand.

I’ve had this small fake succulent for years and it looks so nice, stacked up on books, or next to the light source.

Nightstand Decor Idea #5: Storage Solutions (trays, baskets, etc.)

Number one on my nightstand decor ideas, even higher than the light source, is storage. I, for one, desperately need storage solutions for all my stuff.

In any given day, I have the following in or on my nightstand:

Part of my skincare routine (I like to apply certain things right before bed)

Hand cream

Lip Balm

Lavender roll-on

A place to put my engagement ring and/or my earrings

My phone charger

Glass of water

…and so on.

That’s why I chose a nightstand with a drawer, so I can hide most of the stuff in it. But some things still need to be on the nightstand.

If you’re like me, I recommend two types of storage units:

A bin for your selfcare / beauty items, like lip balms and creams. Something like this Plastic Stackable Storage Box with Pull-Out Drawer from Amazon.

P.s. More Makeup and Beauty Organization Ideas & Storage Options here!

Or something more elegant / fancy, like this jewelry tray from Amazon:

Here is my jewelry tray. I got it from a trip to the UK years ago, it’s from Primark. The other one is from IKEA.

Nightstand Decor Idea #6: Mix and match #1 – #5

Now comes the interesting part- mixing them all together. I suggest going with 3, maximum 4 of the 5 nightstand decor ideas listed above.

Here is one of my favorites: framed picture, plants, jewelry tray and stacked books.

CONCLUSION

Styling a nightstand doesn’t have to be complicated. You just need a few essential items and know how to mix and match them. I hope my post above helped you find cool new nightstand decor ideas to implement asap.

Choosing a rug for your home can be a daunting task.

Not only is it a pretty expensive purchase, but it’s also something you see and use everyday, so you have to make sure you made the right choice, otherwise you will regret it.

Luckly, there are plenty of options out there, in all price ranges, sizes, materials, colors. The key is to know what you want…and what is suitable for your space.

I’ve recently gone through the process of choosing a rug for my living room myself, so I know how to choose a rug that is perfect for a space. I’m here to help you with the tips & tricks that helped me choose the rug that we now love.

So here are the 4 things you need to do (and consider) before actually buying a rug:

1. Measure your space

When it comes to how to choose a rug, size is probably the first and most important step. And how do you tackle this item on your list? You measure your current rug.

That’s what I did. I measured the rug I had at the moment, wrote down the size, and then I talked with my boyfriend to see if we would need a bigger or a smaller one. We both thought the one we had was the perfect size, so we stuck to that one.

But you might have a different situation to deal with.

If you’re replacing a rug, do the previous steps I mentioned.

If you’re moving into a new space and don’t know what size you need, here are steps you need to take:

Sketch a layout of the room, and add all the important furniture pieces, preferably with their respective sizes. That means couch, shelfs, armchairs, tables, etc.

Figure out, taking into consideration the length of the furniture pieces, how long should a rug be in order to come close to, or go under the couch, for example. I recommend a larger rug that goes all the way under the furniture because it makes the room seem bigger (a smaller one has the opposite effect).

By doing this, you will have a pretty clear idea of the size you need for the rug. Step one completed!

2. Take into consideration environmental & traffic data

Before going online and buying the rug of your dreams, you need to ask yourself some questions, and the answers to the questions below will definitely influence your choice:

Who uses it? By that, I mean who usually walks over it, of course. Is it just you and your partner, or do you have kids and/or pets? You need to take into consideration the fact that kids sometimes spill stuff, and dogs and cats leave hair all over.

How often? Will this be a front door rug or an office one? There are different types of traffic for each room, so make sure you choose wisely. If it’s a front door hallway rug, it will need to be sturdy. If it’s an office or bedroom one, you can go with softer shades and materials.

How is the outside environment? If you live in a muddy place, for example, that means your rug will get dirty fast, so I suggest you don’t get a beige or white one. Or similarly, if you live in a colder area, you might want to get a thicker, softer material for the hard winters.

3. Decide on material and the feel of it

Deciding on the material of the rug can be tough, because there are many types of rugs out there. Here are some of the most common rug materials you can choose from:

Wool Rugs.

Pros: handmade, valuable, long-lasting, soft to touch.

Cons: expensive, sheds for a while (requires constant vacuuming for the first few weeks/months).

Wool Coulterville Area Rug from Boutiquerugs.com – click here to get more info about the rug

Cotton Rugs.

Pros: inexpensive.

Cons: fades quickly, doesn’t repel stains.

Jute and Bamboo Rugs.

Pros: natural material, inexpensive.

Cons: difficult to clean.

Faux Fur Rugs.

Pros: good alternative to animal hide, rather inexpensive.

Cons: prone to shedding, harder to clean.

Polypropylene Rugs.

Most rugs on the market are made of synthetic materials.

Pros: affordable, easy to clean, fade-resistant.

Cons: not environmentally friendly

If you want to invest in a quality rug, I recommend going for the wool one, it can last tens of years. If you’re the type who needs to redecorate every 2 years, get a Cotton or Polypropylene or Polyester one.

4. Decide on a color and/or pattern

This will probably be the easiest step of the process, when it comes to how to choose a rug for your home: the color and / or pattern. You probably started with this step, am I right? Most of us do.

It’s time to decide if you want a color or a pattern.

First, think of the room where the rug will be. Is it small and/or crowded? I recommend going with a lighter color / pattern, so it can brighten up the room. (p.s. If you’re dealing with a very small room, here is how to make a room seem bigger)

Then think of the other furniture pieces and the wall colors. Make sure the rug color / pattern matches the vibe and tone of everything. Pinterest is a great place for inspiration and decor ideas. You can create a board with rooms similar to yours and see what kind of rugs they used.

If you want a pop of color or something to attract attention in a very simple and minimalistic room, go for a powerful color / pattern, like red / orange / bright blue, and so on.

But if the room is small, or crowded, or the center pieces are the furniture ones, choose a classic beige, grey or light blue rug that can be easily cleaned.

Where to shop for rugs

You’ve learned how to choose a rug. Now it’s time to actually buy it.

Here are the top places I recommend checking out for rugs:

Amazon.

An obvious choice, I’m sure. Here are 3 rugs I particularly liked:

If you already live in or are about to move into a small apartment / condo / house, you’ve probably already Googled “how to decorate small spaces”, or even “how to organize small spaces”.

I get it. It sucks to finally have your own place, but to deal with the fact you can’t fit all the things you want or need. Or that it feels too crowded because of all the furniture you actually need to have. You know, like a couch, a dining table, a bed, and so on.

Luckly, people have had this problem for hundreds of years, so someone was bound to find the solution, or solutions for it. Enter interior designers and architects (bless their heart)!

They are the experts on how to decorate small spaces, and they have been racking their brains to decorate and organize small rooms for such a long time. It’s honestly a gift. Again, luckily for us, they are willing to share their insights with us, online, on TV, in person, you name it.

Now, I’ve always been open to this type of information. Why? Well, over the years, I’ve learned my fair share of tips & tricks on how to decorate small spaces because, well, I’ve lived in SMALL spaces. I mean, 300-350 square feet small.

I had to decide what to not buy so I could have room to move around in my living room. I’ve had to make due with extremely small kitchens, so I learned where and how to properly organize my kitchen utensils. I’ve been through some interesting experiences, and they’ve all helped me so much.

That’s why I’m here to share my tips & tricks and help you learn how to decorate small spaces. Here my top 6 best ways to make a room feel bigger.

Choose bright colors

Did you know that when you paint the walls in dark shades or choose mahogany furniture, you actually make the space seem more crowded? That’s why interior designers will advise you to use bright colors for your walls, furniture, and even floors. It doesn’t have to be all white, but just make sure it’s lighter and that it reflects natural light.

That’s actually one of the first things I learned about how to decorate small spaces and I still use to this day, even if my house is bigger now. I always paint my walls a light color (mostly white) and I try to use white, beige or light grey furniture.

If you like matte finishes, I’ve heard great things about the Rust-Oleum Chalked Paint in Chiffon Cream, it would look great on cabinets, or maybe to refurbish old dining room chairs?

Use mirrors

Mirrors are a great trick if you want to know how to decorate small spaces, but make sure you don’t go overboard with them 🙂

Cool fact about mirrors is that they amplify the light, so they make the room seem lighter and bigger. That’s why I suggest getting one for places like the living room or the bedroom.

Try leaning an oversized mirror against the wall of your bedroom, it will automatically open the room, and it will also give it a relaxed feel to the space.

Choose wisely your furniture pieces

This is probably my favorite tip. When it comes to organizing small spaces, I recommend having closed closets (with doors). Like the IKEA Billy / Oxberg bookcase with doors. See below.

This way, the overall display will be more simple, therefore it will seem less crowded. The less you see, the better.

To add to that, try to have one built-in closet with multiple areas to deposit, so it can give the room a uniform look. Because having 3 cabinets of different sizes and heights will definitely crowd a space, so if you can avoid that, definitely try.

Effectively use all the nooks and crannies of your space

When you live in a small space, you have to make sure absolutely every square foot is properly and effectively used.

Another tip I have is to be on the lookout for furniture pieces with unexpected storage compartments, like tables or beds.

Let’s say that maybe you don’t have enough closet space. Then use the under the bed space to deposit shoe boxes or organization boxes with out of season clothes.

These Amazon under the bed boxes are great for this purpose, I love that they have a clear cover, so you can see what’s inside without opening it.

Modify the layout

This tip might include extra renovations, so that means more money to spend. But it could make all the difference in terms of how to decorate small spaces.

Try to rethink each area of your house, and think of different ways to use that particular space.

For example, you could close-up the balcony and turn it into an extended living room. Or break down the wall between the living room and the kitchen to have an open kitchen.

It’s about expanding and re-using the space you already have in innovative ways. If you can’t figure it out, try hiring help and working with an architect.

Go vertical

When it comes to how to decorate small spaces, the key thing to remember is: Go Vertical!

This is especially important in the kitchen and bathroom, where people tend to have the most items (like kitchen utensils, pantry, or bath products).

Similarly, in the living room, you could have built-in bookshelves that go all the way up. That would also make for an amazing accent wall.

So you should really invest in HIGH cabinets, cupboards, bookshelves, so you can have more space for storage and decorations. It might require a small mobile staircase, but it will be worth the investment.

So this is: these are my top 6 tips & tricks on how to decorate small spaces! What do you think? Which would you implement right now?

P.S. If you’re in a renovating mode, learn how to declutter your home!
